Although auditory allergy is not very common, it is very disturbing once it occurs. Some patients have no sense of security without earplugs and almost dare not go out. Compared with tinnitus, it is more intolerable. It often affects work and makes general social activities become impossible. Severe people may trigger panic as soon as they hear the sound.

1. Definition of Auditory Allergy

If the tolerance for loudness collapses, it makes the sound stimulus extremely sensitive and uncomfortable to listen to any sound. Even a whisper can be harsh.  This condition is known as hyperaccusis.

2. Description of Hearing Allergy

A patient once described that if someone had a loud voice, his ears felt tense immediately. His tinnitus appeared and he had headache. He would have a fright reaction. His heart rate would be quickened, and he would recover after at least 10 minutes. There are also so-calledmusicians, who are sensitive to music sounds. If there is a slight pitch error, they can not stand it and almost go crazy. This is also a kind of auditory allergy.

3. Complications of Hearing Allergy

Auditory hypersensitivity is more common clinically and many diseases may be complicated with this symptom.

(1) Tinnitus

The so-called subjective idiopathic tinnitus (SIT) generally refers to hearing the voice from one's head with unknown origin, which is a kind of illusory auditory cognition. Some people think that hearing allergy is the precursor of this tinnitus, and the two are related.

(2) Eustachian Tube Open Disease

When the eustachian tube is not completely closed, the middle ear cavity communicates with the nasopharynx, and the resonance cavity becomes larger. It seems that there are earplugs in the ear. The voice sounds echoing. The so-calledautophonyphenomenon occurs. Patients often complain of hearing allergy.

(3) Facial Paralysis

Facial paralysis is usually caused by virus infection. If the lesion affects the nerve branches that innervate the stapes muscle, resulting in abnormal auditory reflex. Auditory hypersensitivity may occur.

(4) Surgical Treatment of Otosclerosis

In the treatment of otosclerosis, the stapes tendon must be cut off. The hearing reflex will disappear after the operation, and the hearing allergy may occur. Speculum for ear, Hartmann aural speculum and metal ear speculum may be applied during the operation.

(5) Cases of Ductus Perilymphacei

The perilympha is extravasated into the middle ear cavity through the tube, and the inner ear presents relative endolymphatic hydrops, which makes it more difficult to tolerate loud sounds. Endolymphatic hydrops need to be treated. The instruments applied may include Welch Allyn ear specula, aural speculum, Farior ear speculum, etc.

(6) Meniere's Disease

This is an idiopathic endolymphatic edema in the labyrinth of the inner ear. At the early stage of the disease, it is common to be afraid of hearing loud sounds.

(7) Severe Deafness

In addition to hearing impairment, patients with severe deafness due to damage of inner ear labyrinth often complain that it is very uncomfortable to hear sharp sounds.

(8) Migraine

No matter with or without omen, typical or common migraine usually presents symptoms of fear of noise and sound.

(9) Mental Disorders

For example, patients suffer from depression or panic disorder often have auditory hypersensitivity or fear of sound.

(10) Autism

Autistic children may not be able to hear certain sounds, but they are particularly sensitive to certain sounds. For example, they can hear the sound of blood flowing in their own blood vessels, or their breath. When it rains, the sound of raindrops become loud, like thunder.

For hearing allergy, tinnitus acclimatization therapy is the mainstream method in the world. Tinnitus habitation therapy was utilized as auditory therapy to desensitize the sound. Pink noise can also be applied to help patients with hearing allergies undergo desensitization training.
